Farmers’ Institute Bursary

The 2023 winner of the Salt Spring Island Farmers’ Institute bursary is Shinta Kikuchi. Shinta is a straight-A student who has been on the Principal’s List throughout all of his high school years. He maintained this high standard all while balancing his time between studies and the soccer pitch where he also excelled. Shinta grew up on a small farm and his passion for nature and gardening was inspired by his father and David Suzuki. He has a very impressive history of volunteering within the Pender Island community. He has been involved in their Fall Fair since age six helping with set up, security, clean up, as well as entering many exhibits every year. Shinta has been accepted into the University of Victoria to pursue a degree in the Bachelor of Commerce program. Along with his studies, he hopes to achieve his goal of playing for the Vikes Varsity soccer team.

We wish you every success in your endeavours. Congratulations, Shinta!

The Salt Spring Island Farmers’ Institute Bursary is presented to a Gulf Islands Secondary School student entering into a field relating to agriculture, horticulture, or the sciences. The Bursary Committee independently considers all the applicants for the annual Bursary of $1000.
